Green Candidate Adam Olsen has stolen the riding of Saanich-North Islands from the NDP's Gary Holman, and winning the second of three seats for the party.
It was expected to be a tight race, but Olsen took the riding by more than 3-thousand votes, noting it's the first time a caucus of Greens has been elected in a first-past-the-post system in North America:
"It's humbling. That's for sure, it's surreal. That's another word I'd use to explain it. I'm really excited though, you know. I think that the Greens have emerged in B.C. politics. I think we're going to establish ourselves here, and we're here to stay, we're not going anywhere. We play an important role in the future legislature. "
Olsen wouldn't speculate on how his party will work with the other parties, saying that's up to leader Andrew Weaver to decide. While new as an MLA, he has served as the Green's interim leader, and is familiar with the inner workings of the Legislature.
Olsen thanked his family, and his supporters,- then left the celebration to meet with party leader Andrew Weaver, saying the work starts now.
