The BC SPCA is caring for 45 neglected Havanese and Havanese-cross dogs surrendered by a former breeder outside of Victoria last Thursday April 12.
The dogs' coats were extremely matted with feces and urine. They were living in unacceptable conditions inside the home, due to high levels of ammonia.
Marcie Moriarty, chief prevention and enforcement officer for the BC SPCA says the individual was cooperative and voluntarily surrendered the dogs, who range in age from 1.5 to 15 years.
"It was the extreme matting that stood out in this case. This type of breed needs intensive grooming. In some cases, it was hard to tell where the dog's face was on it's head."
The person had stopped selling dogs about 5 years ago. The dogs continued to breed and the situation became overwhelming for them.
Moriarty says this situation is an example why the new breeder regulations being developed in B.C. are urgently needed.
Moriarty says they will be recommending charges of animal cruelty in the case.
