Esquimalt continues to investigate the source of contamination in Gorge Creek as new test results show the water isn’t getting better.
The Township says prior to Aug. 24th test results, the level of fecal coliforms were decreasing and were at acceptable levels, but the new test results show the levels rising.
Crews are also reporting a turbidity "milkiness" in the creek as the saltwater is reacting with the contaminated water.
“There’s obviously a new source material coming in,” says Jeff Miller, Director of Engineering and Public Works. “We are dealing with an underground pipe system with multiple connections and multiple openings on the surface so it is going to take us some time to find.”
Back on July 30, the contamination was first reported and township said it was because septic material intentional dumped down a storm drain.
Containment booms remain on site and residents are being reminded to stay out of the creek until further notice. The Township says there are ongoing efforts to be proactive and clean and inspect upstream storm sewers.
So far there does not appear to be any wildlife that has been affected by the contaminants.
Swimming in the Gorge Waterway continues to be safe though according to Island Health.
