An investigation is underway into an unnamed Langford Daycare after a baby girl in their care suffered a serious head injury.
West Shore RCMP confirm an investigation is underway and that the case is being handled by their Serious Crimes Unit. But as it's early in the investigation they can't say much more, other than to confirm the daycare is cooperating.
The baby's injuries were so serious, she had to be airlifted to BC Children's Hospital for care.
According to a GoFundMe page set up to support the young family says the baby's mother -- Katie -- arrived to pick up her 11-month-old daughter, Sophie, and found her vomiting and lethargic.
The daycare provider said the baby had fallen against a coffee table earlier in the day and hurt her face.
Katie took her baby to the Urgent Care Center and they diagnosed a possible head injury. Sophie was rushed to Victoria General Hospital where a pediatric trauma team determined she had a possible skull fracture, and bleeding in the frontal lobe of her brain.
She was flown by helicopter to Vancouver Children's Hospital, where they determined she had also suffered hemmoraging at the back of her eyes, and she had torn her frenulum -- linking her upper lip to her gums.
Doctors told the parents the injuries are not consistent with the accident that was described by the daycare.
Because of that the Ministry of Children and Family Development, and Island Health have been notified to check child care and safety concerns.
Investigators have not yet determined if there was any criminality involved.
An update on the baby's condition posted to GoFundMe says Sophie has made a little progress, but was still vomiting as of yesterday isn't eating and is scheduled for an MRI today.
The GoFundMe page (Baby Sophie's Recovery) has raised over $6200 so far to help allow Sophie's parents stay with her in Vancouver during her treatment and recovery.
