BC's NDP Environment Minister vows that a weak Climate Action Plan brought in by the BC Liberals following secret meetings with the oil industry will be replaced.
Speaking to CFAX 1070 news, George Heyman says it's concerning that documents obtained by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives suggest strong recommendations made by BC's Climate Leadership Team were watered down, resulting in a weak Climate Action Plan -- and all this after the BC Liberals held secret meetings over 3 months with the oil industry in Calgary:
"Absolutely we'll be taking another look at the Climate Action Plan. In fact, there is really isn't a climate action plan at all. We plan to put one in place. We've made a commitment to reconvening a climate leadership or advisory panel. We'll be announcing that in 4 to 6 weeks.
Heyman says he wants to ensure the good recommendations made by the previous panel are looked at, and ways are found to implement them. He adds consultation needs to be done with everyone involved, not just industry, to develop a climate plan that ensures a healthy, prosperous, modern low carbon economy that provides good jobs. And he says that needs to be done in a way that serves the public interest, not rich corporations in Alberta.
