A major travel disruption heading into the final long weekend of the summer.
BC ferries has cancelled four return trips: the 7am and 11am sailings from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen, and also the 9am and 1pm to Vancouver Island.
A caller to CFAX 1070 who was at the Swartz Bay terminal for the 7 o'clock sailing, says fire and ambulance crews boarded the BC Ferries vessel, The Spirit of Vancouver Island.
Shortly after, the engines were shut down and an announcement was made the sailing was cancelled due to mechanical problems.
BC Ferries spokesperson Deborah Marshall says there was an incident involving one of the ship's rescue boats.
Two crew members fell overboard and were taken to hospital for assessment.
