BC Ferries has awarded an $86.5 million contract to build 2 new vessels to a Netherlands firm. The Damen Shipyards will build 2 new minor vessels to serve the Powell River – Texada Island route, replacing the 59-year old North Island Princess which will be retired from the fleet.
The second vessel will replace the Quadra Queen II on the Port McNeill – Alert Bay – Sointula route. The Quadra Queen II will become a relief vessel to allow for retirement of the 53-year old Howe Sound Queen, and will be used for fleet redeployments.
Damen has also signed an agreement with Point Hope Shipyards in Victoria ensuring repair and maintenance activities will be performed in B.C.
The 2 new minor class vessels that are scheduled to go into service in 2020, and will be able to carry at least 44 vehicles and up to 300 passengers and crew.
They'll also include improvements for environmental and energy efficiency, including a hybrid diesel electric - battery power system, which is quieter, smoother and more efficient than traditional diesel propulsion.
