The BC Utilities Commission has rejected the NDP government's decision to freeze Hydro rates for one year. That means a previously-planned hike of 3% will go into effect on April 1st.
Reacting to the news BC's Energy Minister Michelle Mungall says she is disappointed, citing the "affordability crisis" so many families face.
Mungall says the provincial government will be taking action to address the need to reduce electricity costs for those who need it most by working with BC Hydro and customer groups on a lifeline rate program that could see people with a demonstrated need having access to lower electricity rates.
She adds starting in May residential customers finding themselves in an emergency -- such as loss of a job, unanticipated medical expenses, or pending eviction -- will be eligible for a non-repayable grant of up to $600 toward their outstanding BC Hydro bill.
