Now that the protected bike lanes are finished on Pandora, the city is turning its attention to Fort Street.
On Thursday, council will be asked to approve the $3.19 million project, called the "All Ages and Abilities cycling network".
Many business owners along Fort have raised concern that the new bike lanes will affect their bottom line and Mayor Lisa Helps wrote letters of apology to 120 businesses promising better consultation. But now with design in hand and a recommendation for the project to go to tender those merchants say their concerns have fallen on deaf ears.
Fraser Work, is City of Victoria Director of Engineering and spoke Tuesday on CFAX.
"Engagement on the bike lanes and the concepts on Fort goes back to 2014 when there were a series of engagements, but businesses change hands, people come and go and in some cases the messages doesn't percolate up to that key individual, decision-maker, influencer."
The new bike lane will run from Wharf to Cook Street on the north side of Fort, and will reduce a portion of the road to one lane of vehicle traffic.
