Today is officially "Blasphemy Rights Day" in the city of Victoria.
Council made that declaration at the request of the BC Humanist Association, who wanted to draw attention to an old federal law that's still on the books that holds 'blasphemous libel' has a criminal offence punishable by jail time.
Not all city councilors agreed with declaring today "Blasphemy Rights Day." Councilor Geoff Young says it's a worthy cause, but he thinks the city is spending too much time and resources on matters outsideĀ its jurisdiction.
"For us to be debating the pros and cons of issues like this, and there are quite a few that come to council, it just seems to not be a good use of our time and the time of our staff," says Young. "It is not an issue that we have any particular knowledge about, nor do the citizens of Victoria have an interest in us weighing in on it."
Young was speaking on the C-FAX morning show with Al Ferraby.
