A cabin cruiser being refuelled at Fisherman's Wharf in Victoria Harbour just before noon burst into flame. Thankfully the owner did the right thing and pushed the vessel away from the dock after hearing a popping sound. and seeing flames.
As the vessel drifted, a thick black toxic cloud of smoke rose over the harbour. Victoria Fire Department resonded with their fire boat, and was assisted by 2 fire engines.
Victoria Fire says the vessel was about 40 feet from the fuel dock when they arrived, and it drifted across the harbour as the fire boat sprayed it with foam. The vessel was grounded on the Songhees shoreline where the fire was extinguished and the vessel remains 90% under water.
While much of the fuel is believed to have burned during the blaze, the Coast Guard set up booms to try to contain any that remains.
