You may think that Victoria already has a 'bicycle mayor'...but this one is not on the city's payroll.
Susan Stokhof isn't an actual mayor and she doesn't hold a seat on council.
In what’s being called the first position of its kind in Canada, Stokhof, a local business owner and IT Project Manager, is being voluntarily tasked by the city to accelerate Victoria’s approach to cycling.
She says her vision is to normalize cycling.
"Dressing in normal clothing, not wearing cycling gear, reflective clothing and all of that stuff. Part of normalizing culture means infrastructure, quieter streets so that people can ride safely and we can start to see children more often riding their bikes to school."
Created by an Amsterdam-based social enterprise known as BCYS, bicycle mayors are active on every continent. According to the international group, "they identify and lead projects that increase cycling to uncover massive economic, health, and environmental benefits."
