Municipal workers in the Capital Regional District ratified a new collective agreement today. A tentative agreement was reached last week following two days of mediated talks.
CUPE 1978 President Rick Illi says the 4-year deal includes key improvements for CRD workers, including annual wage increases, and a provision to address issues surrounding auxiliary staff.
Illi says with close to 375 auxiliary employees in the district it was a key point of the negotiations. He says in addition to limited job security, auxiliary workers are denied many of the benefits provided to regular staff.
He says the deal provides the opportunity to seek a resolution to their precarious situation through creation of new regular permanent and part-time positions.
CUPE 1978 represents approximately 1,200 members in the Greater Victoria region, including more than 750 members who work for the CRD and provide services for residents and businesses.
