It's something BC health officials have never seen before -- a vibrio cholera outbreak. And it's infected 4 people up island in the Qualicum Bay area.
Island Medical Health officer, Dr. Shannon Waters, says symtoms include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea leading to extreme dehydration.
Waters says a lab is trying to identify the type of cholera we are dealing with:
" Well we are monitoring the situation in collaberation with our partners. And we are asking people if they have symptoms and have eaten herring eggs to come forward. This is a new situation, we have not see this vibrio cholera infection within BC previous to date. So we definitely are interested in following the situation."
Health officials are warning the public NOT to eat herring eggs found on kelp, seaweed or other surfaces that have been harvested from the French Creek to Qualicum Bay area - as they could be tainted.
