We already knew the December 20th wind storm was a bad one -- leaving 750-thousand B.C. residents in the dark, some for weeks.
Now we know how much it cost. Over $37-Million.
The Insurance Bureau of Canada says the storm toppled trees onto homes, tossed boats against rocks and piers, and destroyed half of the White Rock pier.
The bureau is expressing conern over the increases financial costs of climate chnage and the more powerful storms being created.
The insurance bureau will encvourage various levels of government to increase investment in order to mitigate the impacts of extreme weather in future.
That includes investment in new infrastructure to protect communities from floods and fires, improved building codes, better land-use planning and, increasingly, creating incentives to shift the development of homes and businesses away from areas of highest risk.
The total storm-related insurance costs in 2018 from ice storms, floods, windstorms and tornadoes, did $1.9-Billion in damage across the country.
