The recent precipitation received on the island wasn't enough to stop deteriorating stream flows on Eastern Vancouver Island -- so the drought rating is being increased from a 3 rating, to a 4. That's the highest level the province has.
The western part of the Island remains at Level 3 -- but will be re-evaluated as conditions deteriorate. A level 4 means maximum water conservation is being urged, and possible regulatory action may become necessary.
The Province urges all users of surface water and groundwater to voluntarily reduce water consumption -- including residents, industry, farmers and municipalities.
If voluntary reductions fail to maintain stream flows above critical levels, the Province may look at regulating water use, including the temporary suspension of water licences to restore flows to minimum critical levels in the impacted streams.
A number of streams on Vancouver Island are at or nearing record-low flows for this time of the year, and that is threatening fish populations.
Ministry staff will continue to monitor levels, and fishing closures may be enacted if the warm temperatures continue to negatively impact streams and water supplies.
