Tributes to former Victoria Fire Chief Doug Angrove are pouring in from the firefighting community. Angrove passed away Friday in Kelowna after battling brain cancer. He was just 59 years old.
Current Fire Chief Paul Bruce says that type of cancer is recognized as an occupational disease firefighters are more prone to contracting. Because of that, Angrove's name will be added to a memorial at city hall:
"It's the old fire bell from #1 fire station, and underneath it is a little memorial to the members that have passed away in a line of duty death. And as this is a line of duty death, as the cancer that Doug passed away from is a recognized cancer under WorkBC regulations, Doug's name will be added to that as well."
Angrove grew up in Esquimalt, and served as Victoria's Fire Chief from 2006 to 2011.
Victoria firefighters will stage a ride from Vancouver to Seattle in August in the "Ride to Conquer Cancer," to raise funds in Angrove's memory.
