Saanich police believe a young girl was in the crosswalk when she was struck by an SUV at the intersection of Ash Rd and Torquay in Gordon Head at about 8:15 Wednesday morning.
The grade 6 Arbutus Middle School student was walking to school when she was hit and thrown into the path of another car which may also have struck her. Two vehicles were observed stopped at the scene -- one a black SUV, the other a silver car.
CTV Vancouver Island reporter Scott Cunningham says both drivers are cooperating with the investigation. Meantime Cunningham says the girl's grandfather is calling for improvements to make the intersection safer for pedestrians. Cunningham says there is a pedestrian activated flashing light at present:
" I don't know that you'd call it uncontrolled. There is a flashing light system. Vehicles on Torquay would stop. But Ash actually is a through, you don't have to stop there unless you see someone at the crosswalk."
The child was rushed to Victoria General suffering serious injuries.
