A policy passed by the Greater Victoria School District last night aims to ensure transgender and gender non-conforming students are educated in a safe and supportive environment.
Superintendent Piet Langstraat says the policy mostly supports in writing what is already being done in local schools, but some added support is coming.
"There will be one adult in every building who acts as a resource for transgender and gender non-conforming and sexual minority students, staff, and families. So that's something that currently is not in place in every school. It ensures that students are encouraged to and given the opportunity to have clubs dedicated to gender and sexual minorities."
The policy directs that learning resources respectful of diverse gender identities be made available at every school.
It also orders that a gender neutral bathroom be established in the few schools within the district that don't already have one. Langstraat says he expects to have that complete by the end of the school year.
