In many ways, our pets are our best friends and family. They're with us unconditionally. So when the time comes to say goodbye, we owe it to them to put our own feelings aside and make the right decision for them. The BC SPCA says pet guardians should put quality of life over length of life.
Spokesperson Lorie Chortyk says when a pet reaches the point where they can no longer live without pain or distress, it's really your final act of kindness.
"When they are at that point when they are suffering and they can't make that decision, they are really relying on you as their best friend to relieve their suffering."
Chortyk says to help with the grieving process, pet owners can memorialize their furry friend by putting together a collage of photos, recording happy memories in a journal, or planting a memorial tree.
