Government House is where the royal family has set up as a home base for the week-long visit to B.C.
Fire and police showed up to a property near Government House on Rockland Ave and put out the flames to a hedge at around 7:30p.m. on Tuesday.
“From the investigation it appears that it was likely caused by an errand cigarette, said Sgt. PaulBrokes with Victoria Police. “There is nothing suspicious at this time.”
The close proximity to the Government caused a chaotic scene with all the fire trucks and police in the area.
“This is a very sensitive area and the (extra) security precautions with the visit so we were very aware of that.”
There some damage to the hedge but largely the fire was under control according to the Brokes.
