If you are driving in Victoria and Saanich Thursday, DO NOT touch that cell phone.
Victoria Police, Saanich Police, the Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU), and ICBC will be out at various locations looking for violators as part of distracted driving month.
VicPd's Cnst. Matt Rutherford says officers are always watching for violators, and the penalty isn't cheap:
" Right now it's a $368 fine roadside, as well as 4 penalty points which will imply more costs down the road."
Rutherford says for some it's an addiction, and suggests if you can't leave your device alone, put it in the trunk or backseat where you can't reach it until you are safely stopped.
According to ICBC, there are over 800 crashes in this province every day, and in many of those cases distracted driving is a contributing factor.
