The Province has announced the purchase of a property on Yates Street where new supportive housing units will be built to house the homeless.
The property, at 1176 Yates St., is the site of a dilapidated rooming house that council had ordered fixed or demolished last year.
The proposed project would provide up to 40 self-contained studio homes with wraparound supports, 24/7 on-site staff, and service including meal programs, life and employment skills training, and health and wellness support.
The B.C. government provided $1.8 million through the Building BC/Supportive Housing Fund to purchase the property.
As with all supportive housing, an experienced non-profit housing provider will be hired to manage the building.
Pending municipal approvals, construction is expected to begin in December next year.
