A Lantzville resident has been charged with a count of animal cruelty after his senior dog nearly died from a massive flea infestation earlier this year.
The senior terrier, named Rascal, was near death after fleas sucked an estimated 85% of his blood from his body. The dog was seized from owner Gary Kenneth Bob, and rushed to Island Veterinary Hospital for emergency treatment that included life-saving blood transfusions.
Tina Heary, BC SPCA senior animal protection officer, says Rascal was literally dying from fleas. The infestation was so severe the animal welfare organization decided to issue a release about the importance of flea prevention and treatment.
Heary advises pet guardians to consult their veterinarian about flea prevention, which costs considerably less than having to treat an infestation. She adds it's also important to recognize flea control products for dogs are very different from flea treatments for cats, and using the wrong product can be toxic for your pet.
The good news is that thanks to medical intervention Rascal has recovered and is thriving in a new home.
