Some quick thinking by a Saanich veterinarian saved a puppy from an overdose after it ingested some kind of drug in Mount Doug Park, but the doctor doesn't want pet owners to become paranoid about this type of thing happening frequently.
Dr. Helen Rae with McKenzie Veterinary Hospital says the pup was brought into the clinic last week, and after other treatment failed, the dog was given naloxone to counter the effects.
Dr. Rae says she has been working as a vet for 18 years and she's only seen this type of toxicity twice.
"We see hundreds of toxicities of various kinds every year and this is still going to be a very rare version of it I think."
Dr. Rae says she doubts even with the recent fentanyl crisis that animal practioners will see a rise in these types of cases.
She also wants to make it absolutely clear the clinic does not carry fentanyl.
