The People of Nanaimo have spoken loud and clear, voting against the city borrowing up to $80-million to build an events centre.
Preliminary results showed 80 per cent of voters did not support the City adopting a Loan Authorization Bylaw, authorizing council to borrow tens of millions of dollars.
Mayor Bill McKay say the project looks dead, "for now it's gonna be dead as far as I can tell. We'll have to determine with council what our next steps will be."
According to the City of Nanaimo website, voter turnout was 36.2 per cent of the registered voters.
Residents can learn more about the preliminary results at Monday night’s special council meeting at 7 p.m. at the Shaw Auditorium in the Vancouver Island Conference Centre.
