The family of deceased Langford teen, 17-year-old Carter Navarrete is celebrating his life Sunday. The family is keeping their son's memory alive by participating in the BCSPCA "Paws for a Cause" walk which goes at 10 am at Clover Point Park (Sunday).
In March, his parents, Nicole and Mauricio Navarrete, launched a civil suit against the driver, Desmond Vallee, the District of Sooke, the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and the company contracted to do highway maintenance.
Since then the 19-year-old Langford driver, Desmond Valee, has been charged with speeding on Sooke Road just before the crash that killed 17-year-old Carter Navarrete last year.
Navarrete died on Sept. 2, 2016, when the car he was a passenger in left the highway near Parkland Road, rolled over and came to rest upside down in a forested area on the other side of the road.
The family says they are proceeding with the lawsuit in order to make the road safer. Their civil suit blames Carter Navarrete’s death on the defendants’ negligence in ensuring the road was safe. It claims the district, the province and the road maintenance company failed to address risk factors related to safety on Sooke Road.
Last week a judge dismissed an application by the District of Sooke to be removed from the lawsuit.
