A special handover ceremony will take place at Seaspan's Victoria Shipyards Thursday at 9:30am as a New Zealand warship is officially transferred to the shipyard and Lockheed Martin Canada to begin a refit.
Her Majesty’s New Zealand Ship Te Kaha actually arrived in Esquimalt early last month, and has been at the Royal Canadian Navy’s Fleet Maintenance Facility for preparation work, including storing and preservation of equipment and ship systems.
Lockheed Martin is designing and supplying an upgraded combat system for the Anzac Class Frigate, including a new combat management system, a missile system, and a Combat Systems Trainer.
Lockheed Martin Canada also designed the platform and subcontracted Seaspan Victoria Shipyards for installation of the new systems.
It's the first of 2 New Zealand naval vessels scheduled for refits here. The frigate HMNZS Te Mana will arrive next year to undergo similar work.
