Saanich Councilor Teale Phelps Bondaroff wants the municipality to explore the idea of "noise cameras."
"There are already rules under the motor vehicle act and Saanich noise ordinances that prohibit people having excessively loud mufflers. The problem is, how do you report it?" says Bondaroff , who points-out that noise the enforcement solution in some parts of the world are devices known as noise cameras.
"The way noise cameras work is they're like a traffic cameras - like a red light camera or a speed camera - if you go past it making too loud of a noise it's calibrated to take a picture and an audio recording and in some countries it'll just send you a ticket."
Bondaroff made a motion asking Saanich staff to explore the idea, but instead council decided to push into future strategic planning sessions to see if such an idea is possible.
That means it’s unclear if the idea will ever come to pass in Saanich, but Bondaroff hopes it gets considered as noise pollution is something residents regularly bring up with him.
