The MLA for Saanich North and the Islands has issued a statement following Salt Spring Island’s decision to not incorporate as a municipality.
The Greens' Adam Olsen says while discussion of the topic has been an emotional and divisive process, the focus now needs to be on helping the community heal.
But at the same time Olsen says the very real governance challenges that exist on the Island, and throughout the Southern Gulf Islands, remain -- and solutions must be sought in a way that is respectful of the voters' decision.
Olsen has already reached out to Community Affairs Minister Selina Robinson to look into the options that may be available.
It's the second time in 15 years residents voted to reject incorporating as a municipality. Preliminary numbers show 62% voted no.
