Victoria's plastic bag ban comes into effect this weekend.
July 1 businesses can give plastic bags if they have any left in stock, but will not be allowed to purchase any more.
CEO of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, Catherine Holt said some businesses have been getting rid of plastic bags before the ban was even an idea.
“Some of our big community leaders – Thrifties, London Drugs – many of the small businesses have lead by asking people if they want a bag and offering alternatives and reducing their own bag usage, putting the city in a position where it can pass this regulation,” Holt said. “There’s many that are paying attention, I think there’s many many more who are not.”
For customers who forget to bring their own bags, stores will be allowed to sell paper bags for 15 cents, or reusable bags for one dollar.
