The 1994 Victoria Commonwealth Games, Vancouver Canucks Playoff run, and BC Lions Grey Cup win were all honoured for being Defining Moments in BC sports history.
The 15th Commonwealth Games, which were hosted in the Greater Victoria, had events running all across the region. There was track events at UVic, swimming and diving at Commonwealth Pool, triathlon in Sydney, boxing in Esquimalt, and velodrome and cycling in Colwood.
Jim Reed, the Executive Vice President for the 94 games, accepted the award, saying the event put Victoria on the sporting map as one of the best places for athletes, both for training, and for the quality of events.
Tony Collier accepted the award for the BC Lions, he was a Defensive back on the 94 team, and had a hand in getting the thrilling win in a "USA vs Canada Match-up." In 1994, the Lions were facing the Baltimore Stallions in Vancouver's BC Place. Leading up to the final drive, Collier forced a fumble, and the Lions took back possession. The game ended with a field goal from the mustachioed Lui Passaglia, a big win for the Lions, and a big win for Canada.
And Bob Barlow accepted the award for Vancouver's hockey team, Barlow was an iconic hockey player and captain of the Canucks in 1968-69 when they were still a WHL team. Barlow led the Canucks through such a great season that the NHL moved them up to the big leagues. The Canucks were being recognized for their 1994 run in the playoffs, where they made it all the way through game 7, coming incredibly close to winning the cup.
After leaving the Canucks, Barlow played for the Minnesota NHL team in 1969, the North Stars, but returned to the minor league because he wasn't getting enough ice time. He ended up in Arizona, playing with the team that he would eventually lead through a big season, and again the NHL brought up Barlow's team, this time as the Coyotes.
These three moments are the first Definitive moments to be honoured by the BC Sports Hall of Fame, but they plan on making it a new tradition, to honour those who put it all on the line, and inspire youth to do the same.
