The BC Liberals are coming under fire for a decision to divert tens of millions of surplus dollars back to employers and away from injured workers.
Union and business leaders are at odds over the tens of millions that would go to back to small businesses come the election in May.
Aaron Ekman Secretary-Treasurer, BC Federation of Labour, thinks the money should be used to help workers and their families. "There is vehement opposition with tinkering with this insurance agency which was set up with very specific to create a safe environment for BC workers or at least set up some compensation if they get injured on the job."
The Canadian Federation of Independent Business says excess WorkSafe BC funds should be returned to employers to re-invest in business and employees.
Aaron Aerts, Economist, Canadian Federation of Independent Business, thinks the legislation proposed by the Liberals is a good way to help small businesses grow. "The business owners we represent are very concerned about their employees and want them taken care of if they are injured."
The policy is intended to be completed by June with changes being brought into law as early as the next legislative sitting.
