It was another record-breaking number of passengers for Victoria International Airport.
The airport saw 1.85-million passengers last year, up by 8.5-per cent over the year prior, exceeding the Victoria Airport Authority's expectations.
Airport authority vice-president of operations and development James Bogusz says a 9.4-per cent increase in domestic passengers played a huge role in the overall jump in 2016.
"Where we really saw a lot of growth was the domestic market. WestJet, of course, had introduced their Encore service, which was wonderful, that went to Vancouver. Before that they would only fly from Victoria to Calgary and Edmonton. And, of course, additional passengers really on all the main line carriers. Just strong, strong demand."
Bogusz says the increased traffic means they'll have to look at ways to speed up pending and future renovation projects so that more passengers can be accommodated.
