The Capital Region is getting 61 more units of affordable rental housing thanks to a $5 million grant announced by the BC government.
The Victoria Cool Aid Society will get the money and it will go towards redeveloping a property at 210 Gorge Road East.
Victoria Cool Aid Society CEO Kathy Stinson says they tearing down existing building. “To get the density that we want, we are probably going to have to go five or six stories but we are just at the early stages of hiring an architect so we are going to be meeting with neighbours and the community association to really get a vision for that site.”
Stinson says the property will have to be rezoned but they hope to get through that process of getting by the fall.
The new building will have 32 units for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.
The money comes as part of the Housing First Program where the province has promised a commitment of $30 million in capital funding for CRD.
A release from the province says Island Health will provide mental health and addiction services for where support is required.
