Victoria City council is pushing ahead with a controversial art project near the Johnson Street Bridge. The collection of surfboards that are meant to depict an orca rising from the water, and comes with a price tag of $250,000. Councillor Jeremy Loveday voted against the plan saying it makes more sense to defer it.
"With all of the other parks, public space and general expenditure priorities, I think we need to take a leaner and more phased approach to the public realm, and perhaps build it out over time -- do a leaner treatment, and perhaps upgrade when the bridge is finished and opened over the next few years."
Despite a great deal of opposition, Council approved the project.
