Lady Luck may still be smiling on the possibility of a casino in Victoria.
In December, Mayor Lisa Helps brought a motion to council to indicate to the British Columbia Lottery Corporation that Victoria doesn't want a casino, but she says Councillor Mari-Anne Alto made an amendment, which may keep the possibility on the table.
"I don't remember the exact wording, but it's something like 'Unless it's a casino run by First Nations.' And the complicated, challenging piece for all of us, and she made a very strong argument, was 'what right do we have to tell Indigenous Communities what self-determination looks like.'"
The discussion was tabled at the time, and council will discuss the plan on having a casino run by Esquimalt and/or Songhees nations at Thursday's meeting.
Victoria holds all the cards, if the vote is in favour, then further zoning issues will have to be considered before any action can be taken. If opposed, then they will tell the BCLC that the city doesn't want to play.
