With summer comes good times in the sun but one Victoria mother says Banana Boat sunscreen may have led to her son getting a bad burn.
Patrizia Fitch says her son Daniel's arms have been covered in blisters since Tuesday, when he applied Banana Boat Dry-Balance, an aerosol spray sunscreen. "I thought maybe he was out in the sun too much but the blisters kept growing and growing and on the second day the blisters were enormous and they were everywhere."
Fitch said the burns are so bad, the 12-year-old will be stuck inside on the couch – out of the sun – while he recovers over the next several weeks.
Fitch is not alone, there have been other reported cases involving the same Banana Boat product.
Health Canada says they have received 117 reports involving the companies products.
No recall has been issued. Banana Boat says their products are safe for human skin, and can't cause chemical burns but they are taking the concerns seriously and investigating each one.
Pharmacists suggest parents test sunscreen products on their children in a small area on their forearm to see if their child reacts to it.
