A brand new attraction has come to the home of the Harbour Cats... a zipline.
Wilson's Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park has created not only the first ever zipline inside the city limits of Victoria, but also the first ever zipline inside a baseball stadium.
The 400 foot zipline just past the right field fence is also the first zipline ever built in a baseball park. General Manager of the Harbour Cats, Jim Swanson, says it's outside of home run range.
"The longest homerun hit last year in Major League Baseball was 505 feet, and that was in Denver by Trevor Story. That's a little high up in the air, a little thinner air, this is sea level. And I don't believe, partially because I've never pitched in this park, that a ball's ever been hit this far."
The zipline will be running throughout home games. Swanson says they average around 2,400 people in attendance last year, and the zipline will be able to provide about 200 people with rides each game.
The first opportunity the public will have to take a ride is Saturday, June 1, when the HarbourCats hold their first Alumni Classic, game time is 6:35. Doors will open at 5:30, and people can have a ride while they watch the Special Olympics pre-game softball game.
Tickets will be sold in advance at $12.50 each, or $15 at the park on game day. Swanson says people should buy in advance, so as to not miss any of the game.
Swanson also wants to extend a thanks to WildPlay, Telus, Chinook Scaffolding, and the city of Victoria in order to create this attraction
