The Choices Transitional Home, operating at the former youth detention centre in View Royal, wants to stay for another year.
The homeless shelter was rushed into that location back when the province was dealing with Victoria's tent city. View Royal gave Choices a temporary permit to operate but now it's expiring, leading to a request for a one year extension.
Mayor David Screech attended a public information session Wednesday night and heard from neighbours who have concerns, "not problems with the people actually living in Choices but people who are coming to visit them. There's been people wandering on neighbours properties, which makes them feel uncomfortable."
Screech says those concerns will be considered when council debates the mater on April 4th, "council will decide that night whether we're going to issue the temporary use permit and we can attach conditions to a temporary use permit. So, if residents have ideas or things they feel might help the situation they can come and tell us and we can decide if we're going to attach them."
Screech says BC Housing plans to close the facility by the end of the year but they need more time to secure another property somewhere else in Greater Victoria.
