Residents of Shawnigan Lake are celebrating a second victory this week after the BC government announced late Friday afternoon that it was suspending a permit that allowed storage of contaminated soil upstream from Shawnigan Lake.
Minister of Environment Mary Polak says effective immediately, the ministry is suspending the waste discharge permit for Cobble Hill Holdings due to its failure to address outstanding and past non-compliances.
Earlier this week, a BC Supreme Court decision sided with the Shawnigan Lake Resident’s Association in staying the company’s permit to store up to 100,000 tonnes of contaminated soil at its Stebbings Road location.
The Ministry has also issued a Spill Prevention Order to ensure appropriate measures are taken to reduce the risk of leachate escaping from the facility.
